In the heart of Tureac village, in the county of Bistrița-Năsăud, craftsman Leon Burbulea passionately continues a tradition of craftsmanship handed down through generations. With more than 20 years of experience, Leon is a master of leatherwork, specializing in unique pieces: hand-embroidered quilts, beaded belts, Astrahan footwear and hats – all made of natural leather from cattle, lamb, sheep or goat.
His work is a true work of art, every detail is painstakingly crafted with respect for traditional techniques. The gilets are embroidered by hand, while the belts are dressed in calfskin and stitched with beads, some of the embellishments made by his wife, also a folk craftswoman. The sturdy and authentic cow leather footwear is made of calfskin, while the Astrakhan hats preserve the beauty and functionality of the ancient designs.
Although Leon did not go to art school, each of his creations is an expression of his innate talent and love of folk art. “Everything I do, I do out of a God-given gift," confesses the craftsman, who turned this passion into a way of life after retirement.
